Political reporter Sabina Tandara Knezović from Nova TV hosted representatives of the five most popular political options in Croatia on the show “Demontaža” on Tuesday, April 2: Marin Piletić (HDZ), Arsen Bauk (SDP), Marija Selak Raspudić (Most), Davor Dretar (DP), and Sandra Benčić (Možemo!).

Most representative Marija Selak Raspudić, in a rebuttal to HDZ representative Marin Piletić, highlighted that: “Since the beginning of HDZ’s mandate, the price of bread has increased by 60%.” (Source: Demontaža, 25:03 minutes)

We investigated the statement and determined that it is NEITHER TRUE NOR FALSE. Comparing available data from February 2024 with that from September 2016, when HDZ took office, shows an increase in the price of bread and cereals by 57.5%. Furthermore, analysis of data from 2020 indicates an increase of 52.6%, suggesting that during HDZ’s first term, there was no significant increase in the prices of bread and cereals. The price increase that began in 2021 is a result of global price movements of the mentioned raw materials. In conclusion, the price of bread has increased, but not by 60%, rather by 57.5%.
