Filter bubbles shape the content that will be available to individuals in the cyber space, creating an illusion of reality.

Social networks are based on established and defined algorithms that filter the information, data, and content users search for. The selection of content that appears on the user’s homepage results in the formation of filter bubbles and echo chambers. Algorithms on social networks and search engines analyze user actions (likes, comments, shares, searches) in the online cyber space, tracking their digital footprint.

Filter bubbles can influence how an individual thinks, the decisions they make, and ultimately their behavior. By selecting information, the filter bubble algorithm provides users with information, data, and content that align with the topics they search for, their interests, preferences, and so on. Although filter bubbles can suggest relevant and useful content to the user, they can also lead to polarization in society and an increase in misunderstanding towards differences and intolerance.
