The Internet has become an indispensable part of everyday life for people in the 21st century. Newer generations grow up alongside the development of new digital devices and artificial intelligence. From educational and informative programs and content to various games and entertaining videos, everything is now available on the Internet. A large amount of content is aimed at children, who are becoming increasingly present online. There are numerous websites and applications on the Internet designed to educate children about various topics in a way that is both understandable and fun. Learning through various games and videos helps children master complex subjects. Today, there are also games that promote socially desirable values such as understanding diversity, inclusion, respect, solidarity, friendship, and love.
Although the Internet offers many advantages, it also poses certain risks and dangers that can negatively impact children’s safety. Therefore, it is extremely important to talk with children and parents about the proper use of the Internet and the available online content. Not all content on the Internet is suitable for children, so it is necessary to inform both children and parents about which content is positive and promotes beneficial social values, and which content is undesirable, so that children’s online experiences can be safe and positive. Additionally, children need to be taught that it is not advisable to share their personal information online, especially with unknown individuals. Furthermore, there is content on the Internet that is accessible to all users that promotes violence, discrimination, and stereotypes. Cyberbullying is becoming an increasing problem, which can have serious consequences on a child’s mental and psychological well-being. To protect children from undesirable content, it is important to have open discussions with them about navigating and acting in the online world, set certain time limits to prevent the development of addiction and neglect of real-world responsibilities, and educate them on how to recognize and respond to inappropriate content or behavior online.
The European Commission has published an interactive book for children aged 9 to 15 titled “A Guide for Smart Kids Through the Internet World of Wonders – A Complete Set of Magical Potions and Tools That Children Can Use Online.” This guide provides an introduction to the world of the Internet and offers advice for its safe use, and it is available in digital format on the official website of the European Union.
