Sensationalism and Clickbait attract public attention in the short term and temporarily increase financial profit; however, in the long run, they lead to a decline in public trust in media content.

Disinformation, fake news, conspiracy theories, and deceptive and manipulative content are becoming an increasingly significant problem for 21st-century society. Informative and educational content in the media is being replaced by headlines designed to capture public interest and increase financial profits. The rise of sensationalism, tabloidization, and clickbait is becoming more frequent. Sensationalism is a form of writing that violates certain ethical norms and regulations, such as an individual’s right to privacy, reporting on irrelevant topics—gossip—and covering tragedies and accidents, all while relying on the emotions of content consumers. Most sensationalist articles can be recognized by the labels found directly next to them, such as “You won’t believe this,” “Shocking,” “You have to see this,” “Don’t miss this,” and similar phrases.
