On the official website of the Croatian Reporting News Agency, on December 15, a press conference of the candidate for the president of the Republic of Croatia political party Most Mire Bulja was broadcast, in which he stated: “Reduce income taxes. In Sinj, the four cities have the lowest, 18% rate. Which means the lowest income tax rate in Croatia. We are among the 5 cities that have more births than deaths.” (Source: HINA, 2:14 minutes)
We have investigated the statement and found it to be TRUE.
The city of Sinj, along with three other cities in Croatia, reduced the income tax rate from 20% to 18%, which is the lowest rate in the country.
After the Government abolished the surtax in 2023, it left it up to the cities and municipalities to decide whether they will compensate the shortfall in budget revenues that could have arisen from the introduction of this measure on January 1, 2024 by increasing the income tax, or whether they will pay their citizens additionally financial relief by reducing tax rates. City administrations had several months for calculations and a political decision, and most of them (86 cities) decided to keep the current tax rates of 20% and 30%. 33 cities have decided to increase tax rates, and the maximum benefit of the tax reform and abolition of surcharges will be felt by the citizens of only four cities that have lowered both tax rates since January 1 – Bjelovar, Samobor, Svete Nedelja and Sinj.
