Branko Ančić, a sociologist from the Institute for Social Research in Zagreb, discusses the phenomenon of fake news, disinformation, and their impact on society and social processes.

Dr. sc. Branko Ančić clarifies key terms by explaining the difference between disinformation, misinformation and fake news. Misinformation is incorrect information presented as true, while disinformation is deliberately crafted inaccuracies. Fake news, on the other hand, is deliberately created incorrect information with the aim of convincing people of something that is not true, often with serious and destructive consequences for society and social processes.

In the conversation, podcast moderator Andrea Čović Vidović, deputy head of the European Commission in Croatia and media manager, and dr. sc. Branko Ančić analyze how fake news disrupts the social fabric, deepens social inequalities and increases polarization and radicalization. The question that arises is how today’s society, faced with excessive exposure to information and information glut, can recognize credible information.

The first episode of the podcast also asks important questions: what are conspiracy theories, who creates them and how do they arise, what social circumstances and positions encourage the tendency to disinformation, and how we as a community can reduce their influence.

Listen to the first episode of the podcast and learn more about the meaning of disinformation, fake news, misinformation and their impact on social processes.
